5 ‘SMART’ Dieting Tips For The New Year

Here we are at the end of our 7 Day New Year’s Jumpstart program! And I want to finish off with an important topic.. What you’re eating. You simply cannot outtrain your diet – no matter how hard you try.

But the thing is that you DO have some hope, IF you take a serious look at what’s going on in your kitchen… And essentially what you’re putting into your mouth!

Now, as you know, I’m a BIG believer in goal setting. And the same can be said for your diet.

So in order to help you to have a little clarity with this question, let’s discuss how the principle of SMART goals in the key to your dieting success.


‘SMART’ Dieting Tips For The New Year – What The Hell Does That Mean?

Let’s break this down, lol. SMART stands for the following:






These 5 things are the backbone to accomplished and completed goals EVERYWHERE. Whether they are fitness goals, life goals, financial goals, whatever…

In the case for your diet, they can be a powerful tool to helping you to make the RIGHT moves to start to see the physical changes you want to see.


Specific Dieting Goal:

When I’m telling you to make your diet goals specific, I want you to dig a little deeper than the superficial, “I want to eat cleaner/better/healthier.”

Instead, let’s take a look at what that means.

Do you have a habit of ordering out a lot?

Are you among the first to find your hands in a bag of cookies or chips – and eat them mindlessly?

Is ice-cream your weakness, and one small serving not enough?

Do you find that you don’t EAT ENOUGH?

All of these things are more SPECIFIC, and get to the root of what your current eating habits are (and essentially holding you back).

Changing your goals to may say now, “I want to eat healthier by not ordering out every day, and stop snacking on the chips and cookies,” will find you in a MUCH better position to taking charge of your diet.

And essentially seeing the progress you want to see both in and out of the gym.


Measurable Dieting Goal:

For this portion of your goal, I want you to look at how you can now tie a number to the goal to make it a little more realistic.

We’ve established in the example above that limiting eating out, and keeping chips out of the house is one way to get more specific with your goal.

Let’s add another element to the equation that can have you set yourself up for success.

“I want to eat healthier by not ordering out every day and instead save it for once or twice a week. I also want to stop snacking on the chips and cookies, so I will save them for a snack on a cheat day.”

In this case, you are now setting what behavior needs to be changed – but also allowing an element of reward if adhered to.

Make sure that when you ARE setting your goals, you are setting them up in a way to have balance – and success.


Attainable Dieting Goal:

It goes without saying that in order to reach your goals successfully, they should be ATTAINABLE.

Now, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shoot for the stars. Instead, it’s important that you don’t allow yourself to bite off more than you can chew in pursuit of your efforts.

When it comes to ATTAINABLE dieting goals, I want you to look a things through a lens of reality.

Don’t think you can cut out every carb in your diet, and think that’s something you can sustain in the long term. Or if you choose to never eat fat again, but you don’t seem to see your body budging at all.

These things are NOT sustainable. So when it comes to your goals, make sure you are doing things that you can actually accomplish. And will lead to your success over the long term.


Relevant to YOU Dieting Goal:

This principle directly points to the WHY behind what you’re doing.

What is your purpose?

Why have you decided that you MUST drop those 10, 20, 30, 50, or 100 pounds?

What does it mean to you to finally SEE THAT as your new reality?

Well, until you identify that driving factor, you’ll always have a small loophole that will allow you to give up at any time.

Purpose prevents this! Having a REASON WHY ensures that you stay ON TRACK with your eating because the prospects of FALLING OFF THE WAGON means you lose everything.

It means you’ll never see that goal come to fruition. However, if it IS so important for you to change your body, that it’s ALL you can think about…

Finding that relevancy is the saving grace to ensuring your success down the line.


Time Bound Dieting Goal:

The final aspect of our SMART dieting tips for the New Year is all about committing to a time frame.

A goal without a finish line is a mere wish. Why? IT LACKS URGENCY! Share on X

I like to look at goals between a 4 to 12 week time frame. That’s a good 1 to 3 months to really focus your all on your SMART goals, and get the job done.

You don’t want to think about tackling goals for a FULL YEAR without a game plan or end in sight.

How much MORE successful would you be if you say to yourself something like:

“For the next 4 weeks, I want to eat healthier by not ordering out every day and instead save it for once or twice a week. I also want to stop snacking on the chips and cookies, so I will save them for a snack on a cheat day.”

By just putting on that little time frame can help you to have a better focus in really doing well at that goal.

It allows you to be able to have an end in sight, and keeps you accountable to try your best within that time frame.

Imagine how powerful that is… How driven you’ll become knowing that you can do what you set out for – because you know it’s attainable!
