Setting the Stage for Lifelong Wellness
The magic word for today. Longevity. Longevity. Longevity. Longevity.
What are you doing to ensure your fitness goals, your lifestyle? The things you’re doing right now is not only stuff that you can do now, but that you can do for the rest of your life. That is the conversation that we need to have.
Balancing Present Goals with Future Health
It is so easy to get into the swing of just looking at the present and what you’re trying to achieve when it comes to your body transformation goals. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, put on some muscle, get on stage, maybe even prepare for a race, whatever it is that you have in your mind.
A lot of times our focus is on the here and now, and that’s normal, right? We don’t necessarily think about the future, particularly when it comes to our fitness. We don’t really think about what we’re doing next or what we’re going to be doing ten years from now.
Planting Seeds for Future Wellbeing
But I want to start to plant that seed in you to think about that. It’s so easy to get into these habits of overtraining. It’s so easy to get into these bad habits of just doing too much, being self-critical or tearing ourselves down because we’re not where we think we should be in the moment.
Creating Fitness Goals for a Lifetime
Your fitness goals should be ever evolving. They should be ever changing, and you should always be looking at what is coming next, What’s down the line? Where do you want to be a year from now? Five years from now? Ten years from now? Hell… 20 years from now? Where do you want to be?
Securing Your Future Health
What kind of life do you see envisioned for yourself? Well, guess what? If you don’t have a healthy body, if you don’t have a healthy mind, if you can’t move if your body’s diseased, if you’re injured, if you’ve got chronic pain, you’re not going to be able to fulfill any of that stuff. And for so many of you, you have the ability to take control right now to secure your future.
A Personal Journey to Lasting Health
I want to tell you where this comes from. From my point of view now, it’s interesting because I’m on the precipice of my next birthday. And hey, listen, I got to admit something. I meet young girls as middle-aged. I am. And I look back at my life over the last four decades and I see a woman who has evolved on being active her whole life.
Lessons from Experience
I was involved in dance. I was involved in running. I was involved in so many things weightlifting, bodybuilding, professional bodybuilding. And here I am again, full circle, getting myself into the dance world, immersing myself into the culture of Latin dance and social dancing and all that stuff.
Challenging the Present-Moment Perspective
And I tell you what, this road has not been easy even for me after I stopped competing. Figuring out my next steps has been the toughest thing of my life because I equated everything that I was doing in the present to who I was. My fitness goals were.
Envisioning Your Future Self
Yeah, they were caught in the future, I may be about a few weeks, a few months, maybe a year or so, but I did not really foresee where I would be physically, mentally, emotionally as I got older. And now that I’m here, that kind of reality is slapping me in the face.
Committing to Long-Term Health
Like all right, girl, even if you were to step on stage again, because sometimes I get that urge thinking that what’s going to fuel me forward, keep me motivated, is another show. But really I’m just going back into old habits.
Creating Sustainable Habits
But if I’m going to go ahead and make sure that I am 65 years old, 75 years old, 80 years old, and one of those folks was running around the gym, was able to go out and on those walks, hell, you might even see me running to be that inspiration for someone else, for even my own life.
Building Towards a Future Vision
I’ve got to establish that in the here and now and see that vision clearly in my head and make sure everything that I do right now is moving me forward to that goal. That’s where I want to be.
Balancing Ambition and Sustainability
How do I do it? Well, I do it by not overtraining. I do it by not killing myself in the gym every single day. And it’s tough because I’m like you. I’m type A personality. I am a go-get-it-done. And I get it done at all costs.
Prioritizing Sustainable Choices
But that’s not going to help me in the long run. And as we get older, we have to start thinking about the long run if you’re young. And listen, even if you’re not so young, this is the reality check that you’ve got to ask yourself.
Finding Balance for Long-Term Wellbeing
So if I’m taking you through a workout today and I’m asking you to do things that are not going to make sense for you 5 years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now, then I’m not doing my job. And that’s what I want to make sure that I’m doing.
Embracing Sustainable Progress
I always tell folks I don’t care what kind of shape you’re in. I don’t care how old you are. You should be able to take my workouts and figure out a way to adjust them to your life so you’re still getting the work in but that you’re not compromising your joints. You’re not compromising your muscles in a bad way. So that’s my goal.
A Lifelong Journey
When you start thinking about your workouts and you start thinking about your fitness and you start thinking about your lifestyle, I want you to start thinking about longevity.
Finding Balance for Long-Term Wellbeing
What can you do right now that’s going to set you up for the long game? And that’s hard, because we’re used to thinking about what’s going to get us the short-term satisfaction. We want to look good right now. We want to feel good right now. We want to feel better about ourselves right now.
Prioritizing Health for the Long Run
But it’s also important to think about what are the implications of what you’re doing right now 5 years from now? 10 years from now? Because if you’re constantly pushing your body to the brink, if you’re constantly training so hard that you can barely recover, you’re constantly sore, you’re constantly feeling like you’re breaking down, that’s not going to serve you well in the long run.
Lessons from Experience
And I’m telling you this from experience. I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I’ve had times where I pushed myself so hard, I was broken down. And I wish someone would’ve had this conversation with me back then to say, hey, slow down. It’s okay to still have goals. It’s okay to still push yourself but do it in a sustainable way.
Nurturing Sustainable Habits
So as we’re going through this workout, as we’re going through this routine, I want you to be thinking about that. I want you to be thinking about what am I doing today that’s going to benefit me a decade from now? Two decades from now?
Embracing Lifelong Fitness
And it doesn’t mean you can’t push yourself. It doesn’t mean you can’t have those intense workouts. But it means you have to be smart. It means you have to listen to your body. It means you have to prioritize recovery. It means you have to prioritize sleep.
Commitment to Long-Term Wellness
It means you have to prioritize all those things that sometimes we overlook because we’re so focused on the end goal, on the immediate goal.
Nurturing Your Future Health
But the truth is if you want to be able to do the things you love 10, 20, 30 years from now, you’ve got to take care of your body right now. And that means finding a sustainable routine. That means finding a balanced routine. That means finding something that you can do over the long term.
Striving for Long-Term Balance
Because I’ll tell you, it’s better to do a little bit consistently over the years than to do a lot in a short amount of time and then burn out and not be able to do anything at all for months or years.
A Journey of Lifelong Wellbeing
So think about your fitness journey as a lifelong journey. Think about it as something that you’re going to keep evolving, keep adapting, and keep adjusting as you age. Because your body is going to change. Your goals are going to change. Your priorities are going to change. And that’s okay.
Future-Oriented Wellness
But the one thing that should remain constant is your commitment to taking care of yourself, to staying active, and to making choices that support your long-term health and happiness. So as you go through this workout, as you go through your fitness journey, keep the long game in mind. Think about the kind of life you want to lead years down the line. And let that vision guide you in your choices and your actions each and every day.
