Personal Trainer vs Online Coach. Which Should You Hire?

You’re at a point in your fitness journey where you know that you simply need HELP. You’re sick and tired of trying to figure all of this stuff out on your own. Hiring a fitness professional is exactly what you need! You have one question though… A personal trainer vs online coach. Which should you hire?

With SO many online coaches and personal trainers out there, it feels like the market is really oversaturated.

And those choices are leaving you feeling overwhelmed.

Before you hire your next coach or trainer, watch this.

Let’s breakdown if having an online coach or an in-person trainer is best for you. And a few things you should look out for before signing that contract.

If you’re reading this article right now, you’re wondering whether it’s worth it to actually hire someone to help you attain your fitness goals.

And with SO many options out there… You’re probably wondering if it’s more advantageous for you to go with an online coach or to go with a traditional personal trainer, right?

As someone who’s been in this industry for a very long time, I want to give you some pointers about how you can decide what’s right for you. Or, if hiring anyone at all is necessary.

So many people use YouTube, Google, blogs and everything else as resources to be able to find the answers for what they need to solve problems.

That’s probably how you got over here!

You’re trying to figure out how you can get to the next level when it comes to your fitness – and REALLY achieving your physical goals.

And at some point, with all the free information that’s out there in the world it can be really overwhelming!

It could become time consuming, and it can be downright frustrating because you don’t know which way to go, or what to trust.

And, that’s when you definitely want to consider working with someone.

For some people, they get this trepidation about actually hiring a fitness professional. But when you think about it, you hire professionals for all aspects of your life, right?

If you have a huge case you’ve got to go to court for, you hire a lawyer. Need to get your taxes done, you go to an accountant. Want do your hair for a special occasion, you hire a hairdresser.

We’re always hiring service professionals to help us out with the things that we know we do not have an expertise in.

So why is it that fitness is any different?

A lot of frustrated gym goers think that just showing up to the gym and “eating clean” is going to be that magical thing that drives them forward.

But when you realize that you’ve been doing all of that for a while, and it’s not working… Maybe you need to consider working with a coach or trainer.

The Big Debate – Personal Trainer vs Online Coach. Which is BEST?

I always think that it’s a good idea for those have never trained before, to focus on building a good foundation by working with a fitness professional.

Keep in mind, I don’t think that hiring an online coach is a good option for beginners.

Your focus needs to be on learning about proper form, and building a basic strength training foundation.

If your trainer gives you a program, you must know how to execute the moves that are you’re being asked to perform without injuring yourself.

So in your case, it may be more advantageous for you to work with a local personal trainer. One who can meet you on a weekly basis, until you feel really confident and you’re able to navigate the gym on your own.

I would advise that having about two years of experience in the gym (at the very least) is an ideal amount of experience to work with an online coach.

Tips On Choosing The Right Local Personal Trainer

Now, here’s the thing personal trainers come in a variety of different training styles, skill sets, and bedside manners.

When I was a trainer, I was always the kind that was very hands-on. I was very much about teaching my clients, so that they understand what we’re doing, and the “why” behind it.

In my theory, it allows them to really fully execute what I’m asking them to do, and for us to get to a goal in a way that helps them to maintain results in the long run.

Sometimes I had clients who needed their hand held, and so I was there to be that presence to get them through tough moments.

So you really have to find the right match for you because everybody’s personalities and skill sets are so different!

Don’t be afraid to interview trainers. Ask whether they’re certified, or if they specialize in anything. Ask to see what results they’ve gotten for their clients.

These kinds of questions are so important because it gives you a window to see whether or not that person is the right match for you.

I always say that training is like dating and you have to find that right companionship, that right match.

How Much Should Your Trainer Cost?

Now, always keep in mind as with any service, with personal trainers how much you pay them and what you’re putting in to invest, you’re probably going to get out in quality.

Someone like me, who’s been in the industry for many years, and whose trained everyone from the everyday average person to celebrities, that fee will be a lot higher. This is true particularly if you live in big health conscious cities like LA and New York.

But it’s not necessarily about the expense of how much you’re paying a trainer. All I’m saying is do not think that the cheapest option is the best option.

And you’re going to have to invest if you want to work with a really sound, smart professional who’s not going to injure you or mentally torture you!

Do your research.

Tips On Choosing The Right Online Coach

When I started my company back in 2009 nobody, I mean hardly anybody, was doing online coaching.

It was kind of like this niche thing that maybe a small handful of trainers were doing. Moreover, you would see it in the in the bodybuilding realm where there were coaches who were very specific to contest prep.

There were not a lot of people who knew how to do that, so the only way to reach these people if you were living in different areas around the world was to work with them online.

When I came on the scene, there weren’t very many of us. I remember having to explain to people what online coaching actually was and how it worked.

But nowadays this is a totally different story. The industry has exploded, and everybody and anybody can be an online coach. The bar for entry is very low.

Do Your Research FULLY

What I would say is when you’re choosing an online coach, it’s really going to be important for you to really do your research on that person.

Follow them on social media. Their philosophy, does it match with yours, is it aligned with yours? If it does, then that might be a good match.

I really feel that you should talk to the person that you’re going to be working with – especially if you’re going to be investing a lot of money with them.

I speak with my clients constantly. The only thing that makes my business online to me is the fact that I live in Los Angeles and my clients live worldwide.

But it doesn’t mean that we don’t have personal conversations, or that we don’t touch base like human beings. And I think that’s an important part of the coaching realm.

Beware That Not Every Online Coach Is The Same

One of the things that really irks me about online coaching is that people aren’t actually coaching.

When you think about the word coaching, it’s about taking someone and looking at the problems they’re dealing with, and giving them that solution.

And not only doing that, but equipping them with the ability to move forward without you at some point. To make sure that they’re learning something along the way.

Further, in my approach, inspiring them to be better women, to grow from the inside out. And to not just look at this as “here’s your diet program, here’s your training program, check in with me with pictures and measurements in the week. Then I’m gonna give you something new.”

To me that’s just online training.

It’s not really personal. So you really have to do your research to see whether that person delivers the type of service that you want.

Now, the good thing about the industry exploding like it has, is that it’s given people like me that have been at this for a long time to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the pack.

In my case I am more of a mentor and an actual coach. My business is all about building a woman from the inside out, and has all kinds of moving parts to the programming.

When you work with someone like me, who does more of the behavioral and lifestyle coaching in addition to the health and fitness stuff, then you’re going to be looking to invest a little bit more money than you would with someone who’s just writing a diet and training program.

Make sure to read client testimonials, see if they have case studies online, and most importantly observe if they live by what they are trying to teach you.

Authenticity is so important. I live the life I’m telling you to live, breathe, and sleep it. I even own my s-h-i-t too, and try to fix it. From that comes my ability to coach you on how to do your stuff better, get over your stumbles and your blocks simply because I know them all too well myself.

In Conclusion. Is It WORTH Hiring a Coach or Personal Trainer?

Absolutely, yes.

Keep in mind that no matter who you hire  it is not going to be a miracle formula. YOU have to show up, YOU have to be at a place where you are willing to come and do the work.

So many people think that just because they hire someone everything’s going to magically fall into place. You have to be willing to change your lifestyle, and show up and do the work.

Otherwise, nobody can help you.

At the end of the day, I like to think of my client relationships as something that’s not going to be forever.

But we allow the journey to take as long as it needs to. So also not being in a rush is a very important thing in this process as well.

You have within you the power to be as successful as you want to be. It’s all about you putting in the effort and accepting when you need to reach out.
