Orthorexia: When Healthy Becomes Harmful
Many of us still feel the effects of the pandemic, especially regarding our health and fitness. Women in their 30s to 50s have faced unique challenges—juggling work, family, and personal well-being—while trying to get back on track with their fitness goals. As a fitness professional, I’ve seen firsthand how tough it can be to find the motivation to return to the gym, re-establish a healthy diet, and regain control over your body. But there’s another struggle that’s emerged during these times: orthorexia nervosa.
What is Orthorexia Nervosa?
When we think of eating disorders, anorexia and binge eating often come to mind. But orthorexia, an obsession with eating “clean” and exercising excessively, is rising. It’s easy to overlook because it often appears as someone being dedicated to their health. But this fixation can spiral into dangerous territory where the lines between healthy living and mental illness blur.
Orthorexia nervosa involves an unhealthy obsession with eating only pure, healthy foods and adhering to strict exercise routines. Unlike other eating disorders, the American Psychiatric Association does not officially recognize orthorexia, so many overlook it. But make no mistake—it is real and can have severe consequences on both mental and physical health.
The Pandemic’s Role in Rising Orthorexia Cases
The pandemic has fueled this surge. A 2021 study from the Frontiers in Psychology journal explored how COVID-19 lockdowns impacted women’s eating, body image, and social media habits. The findings were startling. During the lockdown, many women with symptoms of orthorexia reported eating more, feeling pressured to lose weight, and gaining weight. Social media, with its flood of fitness influencers and diet fads, added fuel to the fire. It amplified these pressures and created a breeding ground for disordered eating.
The data speaks volumes. Women with higher orthorexia scores saw more weight loss content on their social media feeds. This exposure drove them deeper into their obsession. This isn’t just about eating “right.” It’s an all-consuming fixation that strips joy from food, turns exercise into a compulsion, and isolates individuals from loved ones and enjoying life.
A Tragic Case: Obi Ndefo
Let’s reflect on the tragic story of Obi Ndefo, a Hollywood actor and yoga teacher who passed away due to heart failure linked to orthorexia nervosa. His life was a picture of health and resilience, especially after surviving a catastrophic accident in 2019 that left him as a double amputee. Ndefo didn’t let his disabilities slow him down. He got back to yoga just weeks after his accident and continued to embody strength and perseverance.
But beneath his determination was an unrelenting obsession with health. While his commitment to his diet and exercise seemed like commendable discipline, it masked a deeper issue. His family later shared that orthorexia played a significant role in his heart failure. Ndefo’s story reminds us that even a healthy lifestyle can harbor hidden dangers when balance is lost.
Social Media’s Impact on Orthorexia
During the pandemic, social media became a double-edged sword. While it served as a source of connection, it also flooded us with images of “perfect” bodies, extreme diets, and unrealistic fitness expectations. For women already feeling the pressure to look a certain way or reclaim their pre-pandemic bodies, this barrage can be overwhelming. And for those prone to orthorexia, it’s a slippery slope into an obsession that consumes every waking thought.
The pressure to maintain a certain image doesn’t just affect adults—it impacts younger generations as well. Consider the case of a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with orthorexia during the pandemic. She wasn’t afraid of gaining weight or obsessed with her body shape like those with anorexia. Instead, she fixated on controlling her nutrition, heavily influenced by what she saw online. She followed an unbalanced diet based solely on vegetables, driven by the belief that this was the pinnacle of health. Her story is not isolated—many young girls are caught in this web, driven by the need to conform to social media’s portrayal of the “ideal” lifestyle.
Are You At Risk?
Now, I want you to take a step back and ask yourself: What are your motivations when it comes to your diet and exercise? Do you cut out entire food groups without medical necessity, or exercise to the point of exhaustion every day? If your routines are rigid and leave no room for enjoyment or flexibility, it’s time to reassess. Orthorexia isn’t about health—it’s about control, and when that control takes over your life, it becomes harmful.
It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of perfection. But health isn’t about perfection—it’s about balance. If you can’t imagine eating a piece of cake at your child’s birthday without guilt, or if you spend hours in the gym chasing an unrealistic standard, it might be time to rethink your approach.
Finding Balance: The Key to Sustainable Health
Ladies, we have to be smarter about how we approach our health and fitness. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to eat well and stay active, but it has to be sustainable and adaptable to life’s ups and downs. Ask yourself if the habits you’re forming today are ones you can maintain for the long haul. Can you enjoy a meal out without scrutinizing every calorie? Can you take a rest day without feeling anxious or guilty? These are the questions that matter.
It’s okay to seek guidance from professionals, but make sure they have your best interests at heart. Avoid falling into the trap of extreme diets or workout programs that promise rapid results but offer no real, long-term solutions. The fitness industry is filled with fads and quick fixes, but true health is a lifelong journey, not a destination. And that journey should be enjoyable, enriching, and flexible enough to accommodate the beautiful, messy reality of life.
